Whilst suffering a second painful bout of sciatica, the Bowen Technique was recommended to me. After four sessions I was pain free, and just needed the occasional top up session.

I had never heard of  the Bowen Technique before, but it has changed my life.

Based near Sarum Hill in Basingstoke, I am now a qualified Bowen Technique therapist and a full member of the Bowen Association UK.

The History of The Bowen Technique

Thomas Ambrose Bowen (1916-1982)

Tom Bowen developed the technique, now named after him. He began in the 1950s in Geelong, Australia, when he found that making small moves on the body had beneficial effects.

Tom Bowen had no formal training, but had a keen interest in how bodies held compensation patterns, and a desire to help those in need.

He believed that his work was 'a gift from God' and he continued to develop and refine the technique throughout his lifetime with the help of his friend and secretary, Rene Horwood.

A chance meeting in n 1974 with Oswald Rentsch (Ossie) resulted in Ossie studying and documenting Tom Bowen's work. Tom had made no notes on his findings.

By 1976, Ossie and his wife, Elaine, had began using Mr. Bowen's technique in their own clinic.

On Tom's deathbed, Ossie promised to carry on the technique and promote it throughout the world.

Ossie and Elaine founded the Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia in 1987, eventually naming the technique Bowtech - The Bowen Technique and have been tireless in their efforts to preserve this wonderful technique, and ensure it has been taught in its original form, as developed by Tom Bowen.

To date, the Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia has 90 accredited Instructors, and courses have been held in over 30 countries.
